Elections continue: Early voting on campus for City Council tie breaker - University Star

Elections continue: Early voting on campus for City Council tie breaker
Dec 2 2009 - 1:08am | DJ Nutter

Early voters began casting their ballots Monday as the people of San Marcos head to the polls for the second time to elect a candidate to City Council Place 5.

The only candidates on the ballot this time are Ryan Thomason and Lisa Marie Coppoletta — who got 49.9 percent and 26.2 percent of the votes Election Day Nov. 3, respectively, sending them to a runoff.

Candidates said economic issues are proving to be the No. 1 priority for voters who have been going door-to-door around the city.

“We have a $146 million budget for economic development,” Thomason said. “The most important thing either of us is going to work on is the budget, and well, Lisa has not been a part of that.”

Thomason said his experience as a member of the Planning and Zoning Commission and as a finance major make him the more experienced candidate regarding economic issues.

Coppoletta, disagrees, saying her 20-year experience working on grassroots issues in San Marcos make her the more experienced candidate. Coppoletta said she has focused much attention to issues facing veterans.

“(My proposals) are getting the ears of city officials,” Coppoletta said. “I’m also an activist in preserving the San Marcos River, and in making sure that graduating college students get good paying jobs in our community.”

Candidates said they want to set the record straight regarding any factually inaccurate information causing negative opinions among voters.

“I’ve heard people say that I want to fill the river with concrete just because I’m involved with economic development,” Thomason said. “Nothing has been too derogatory, and I’m surprised because five or six years ago we had a different kind of politics in San Marcos.”

Coppoletta said being thrown into the political realm of name-calling was expected. She said putting debate videos on her campaign Web site is an effective way to dispel the legitimacy of any mudslinging.

“People know that I’m the first person to speak up, but I’m also the first one to compliment,” Coppoletta said. “I know what’s in my heart, but I’m still sensitive.”

Coppoletta said she has been receiving donations since November, but still considers herself a grassroots organizer.

Thomason said he spent less money on the runoff election because more than $20,000 was spent on November’s election for less than 2,000 votes. He said the consistent trickle of new people donating to his campaign have helped pay for writers and signage.

“Six different people used money in six different ways last election, and only 7.09 percent of registered voters went to the polls,” Thomason said. “Signs can’t vote, money can’t vote. Only people can vote.”

Early voters can cast their ballots at Hays County Elections Office until Dec. 11 or at LBJ Student Center Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5p.m.
Election Day will be held Dec. 15, with the polls open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

"The Place 5 race features Lisa Marie Coppoletta, Shaune Maycock and Ryan Thomason.

Coppoletta, an academic adviser at Texas State, said she favors limiting urban sprawl and increasing the number of green jobs in the community. An opponent of incentives to Springtown and city subsidies for outlet mall advertising, Coppoletta, who lost to Place 4 Council Member Chris Jones in the 2008 election, said she'd like to build up local businesses instead."

Dan McCarthy Speaks about Machines on Campus Early Voting

I am not sure why the video is so dithery. I've uploaded it to both youtube and blogger and the end result is the same. The source i am uploading it from is working just fine on my desktop.

Actually, this is one of my favorite scenes shot on election day. Here is Daniel "Dan the Man" McCarthy speaking about his experiences polling citizens during early voting on campus at the LBJ Student Center.

In this clip, Dan discusses his concerns {responding to ours which occurred on election day} regarding the machines in terms of feedback that he received from students on campus who punched straight ticket during early voting.

Daniels Voting Machine Malfunction

These are a couple of clips from rough cuts that we assembling perusing thru some of the footage. This material was filmed on election day, which is when we always go vote.

In the segment, Daniel is totally bummed that he did not get to cast his ballot for me. And, I was a little disappointed too! We are well aware that many voters are often perplexed by the machines. I know I am. This is all the more reason for a campaign to educate the citizens of San Marcos how these voting contraptions work.

"So, is LMC connected with this debacle?"

"I'm serious. She started the thread, so I want to know, especially if she ever decides to run for office again."

"jaysus, semi, for a "moderator", you sure are a rude and crude dude.
Your attacks on LMC have crossed the line way too many times.

78666.com - Discussion Forum Threads - "Online Debate {place holder}" Hoopla Continues

The discussion at 78666.com is heating up even post election regarding the online debate that I challenged the incumbent in which he first agreed and then refused. His rejection of an online open forum following a series of phone calls attempting to line up the debate {all recorded on video} aired for 24 hours on online at youtube and I posted the link to 78666.com while the video was available. The clip will appear in the documentary.

FAVORITE QUOTATION:
“LMC proved one thing beyond the shadow of a doubt, Chris Jones is a liar. Her recording of him was perfectly legal in Texas and 37 other "one party" states. I still think Jones is a "professional politician" treading water on the city council until an open seat at a higher level is available. That he is rather dull, unimaginative and incompetent makes him somewhat likeable (or at least acceptable) to us no-growthers.”

World United Music Festival cancelled
Posted on November 16, 2008 at 10:24 pm
"Music fans who were looking forward to three days of fun found a rude shock as the World United Music Festival was abruptly canceled. Festival staff were told by Jerry Payne, the organizer of the WUMF , that the remaining lineup of musicians would no longer be allowed to play and ticket holders were to be refused entry. People already attending the festival were asked to leave."

78666.com - Home Page

The story at the home page of 78666.com was just awesome and appreciated as the election was unfolding.

Here are some of the comments posted prior to November 4th:

I see a clear choice in this election. This is between the two opposing philosophies that underlie life; service to self and service to others. Chris Jones is not a bad person, but he's in service to himself first and the electorate second. I think he'd support anything that would get him more votes. Lisa Marie has a long record of service to others. I don't think she would change an iota for any number of votes. To her, victory is achieving the goals she has set for this city and it's citizens. To Chris, victory is getting reelected.

Name: Lawrence
I've heard a rumor that the University Star will not print Lisa Marie's essay because Jones can't/won't write one. Anyone know more on this? A new "unfairness doctrine"?

Name: real jupiter
brad, its whinning meely mouse "know it alls" like yourself that make me want to eat dirt! Whoo hoo 1270!!! Man do you have to wear cork stoppers in your ears to keep all that mega gray matter from seeping out? I did not see your name on any ballot, wat up law dog?! Whom is wasting others time? How long have you been practicing and how many pro bono hrs. per month do you log?

Name: Brad
Sorry real jupiter, I am not a surrogate of Chris's and never went to this school. I actually scored above the Schools low standards on the SAT and went to UT Austin. Yes, it did take me 4 1/2 years to graduate from there but again, my 1270 SAT was to high for the SWTSU 850 minimum for attendance. I am an attorney here in San Marcos that is simply getting tired of the wasted seat that Chris Jones has held in place 4. As you have probably already figured out by now, my real name is not Brad.

Anyway, I am sincere in the fact that Chris Jones works harder to get elected than after he has been elected. He has done nothing since being in office and we have 3 years wasted in him already. I really wish that Lisa was just as serious about defeating him but that does not seem to be a reality. She is making a documentary on the political process and that is a shame. Between her and the idiot Dan Macarthy, they are wasting all of our time.

Regarding yard signs - If you are serious LMC, put some signs out or quit yanking our chain for your documentary!

Answers to " Quick Question" posed by Daily Record

Got a call and this needs to be e-mailed stat. The request below whose subject header is "Quick question" was emailed at 2:33 PM.  I hear this word a zillion times a day at work and it just cracks me up that it is applied to questions posed to a candidate for a communication piece to be distributed to thousands in our community.  Here are my answers written on the fly because of this looming deadline.  Now, lets see if and when the article is actually published.

“20 years of experience living in San Marcos and working as a consensus builder on issues such as the municipal fiscal responsibility, environment, at-risk youth, and film and multimedia.”

“ I offer a unique plan to attract a new industry to the downtown which is aligned with our model of tourism to enhance the flow of commerce so that the dollar circulates throughout the city from small business to small business”

“Being recognized by Bob Bullock Museum as top actor/multimedia artist in state of Texas qualifies me to direct and cast San Marcos as a principal location for feature films, commercials and network television shows.”

“Cut waste and provide financial incentives for those that go green implementing sustainable forms of powering for their homes and businesses."

“Two degrees from SWT in Speech Communication and recognized as top graduate student and first undergraduate debater and only women to this day to attend the National Debate Tournament.”

“In addition to feature productions, a small independent film will often spend thousands of dollars in one day on catering, building supplies, and rental equipment. Feature productions are a proven success throughout America in states such as Michigan, Louisiana and New Mexico and cost citizens zero for free advertising of our respective cities.

“I’m especially concerned about the current national and global economy. “NOW, is the time for a proactive approach to ensure that downtown businesses prosper.”

“I encourage voters to review all of the debates which are posted at my website
http://www.myspace.com/lisamarie4sanmarcos

“Throughout the campaign I have opened up online chats and would have an open line during city council meetings and prior for citizen input as an innovative way to use technology for communication regarding community concerns.”
